Description

Cabriole legs are one the most recognized decorative elements found in Chippendale and Queen Ann furniture design. With differing profiles and varying degrees of shaping many variations of this graceful leg exist. Our example will end with a turned pad foot. Leg blanks with already turned feet will be available. If time allows stock for a practice leg and foot will also be provided.

A typical project includes at least 2 legs. So, producing matching pieces is essential. This class will cover the basic process of forming the 2 silhouettes, fairing the curved faces of the leg then shaping the corners. We will discuss designing and creating patterns, joinery considerations and the incorporation of transition pieces.

Using both hand tools and machines we will explore the idea of balancing efficiency and expediency. Frequently the handtools approach is actually more efficient!
