Description

In this new woodcarving class, learn how to carve a variety of Federal Fans from the late 1700s - often seen in American period secretaries and high chests. Connecticut cabinetmakers utilized their own unique take on this classic ornamentation – frequently coming up with some truly different looks. We will explore some local Connecticut fans with Mary and see how to apply them to your own work.                                                         Beginning with tool safety, sharpening and learning to read and work in the correct grain direction, Mary will then work through how to draw and carve several different fan designs, learning the technique of carving both convex and concave rays. We will be working in both bass wood and the traditional mahogany. This is a great class- even if you have been carving for awhile- you will surely learn a lot you had no idea about! Mary is a full time professional carver and teacher whose work has been published internationally. She runs her own school in Missouri and teaches throughout the country. Sign up today. Space is limited to 8 students.

Tuition: $845.00 plus materials ($35.00 plus tax)
