Description

In this hands-on, step-by-step course, Ben Strano guides you through the power of Fusion 360 as a furniture-design tool suited for woodworkers, makers, and designers alike. Whether you’re sketching a case piece or planning jigs and fixtures, you’ll learn how to turn ideas into accurate 3-D models, generate build-ready drawings, and explore how Fusion 360 can help clarify design, improve workflow, and reduce surprises in the shop.

You’ll begin with the fundamentals of working in Fusion 360—from boards and parts to assemblies and parametric relationships—then move into furniture-specific workflows: casework, joinery, curves, and much more. Along the way, Ben will demonstrate how modeling can be a creative and practical partner to your hands-on work—helping you test proportions, verify parts, and plan your builds before you head into the shop.

This is a hands-on course. Students will model furniture in Fusion 360 alongside Ben, so they should bring a laptop (Mac or PC) with the free personal-use version of Fusion 360 already installed. While not required, a mouse with a scroll wheel is highly recommended for easier navigation. Students don’t need to be computer experts, but they should be comfortable with basic tasks such as downloading and opening files, navigating folders, and installing software. A general familiarity with using a computer for creative or technical work is helpful and will make the class more enjoyable. Ben Strano is responsible for all digital content on finewoodworking.com and is the Executive Digital Editor, AIM Woodworking Group. He uses Fusion 360 in his own shop and is also teaching 3D printing for Woodworkers.
