Join furniture restoration expert John Coffey as we jump into this fascinating world of applying Gold Leaf gilding to a leather desk top. Kind of a specialized subject- right? But cool enough that you really have to learn about it!! Students will learn about the materials used- the leather, the gold leaf and where to get it. We will learn how to put the leather down on a flat surface and emboss that surface using engraved “rolls” or embossing wheels. Additionally, the student will learn how to compensate for errors or skips in the process as well as tinting the gold and blind (non-gold) impressions using glazes.
While this work can be done by a single person, it is very helpful to have an assistant. Two-person teams will complete two panels, each person getting a shot at assisting and at the embossing. A number of different rolls will be available for the students to try.
We will be working on panels that are small enough that they could be used for a lap desk- or just as a panel to hang on the wall.
