Description
Hans Wegner was one of the most innovative and prolific designers of the 20th Century. In this six day class you’ll build a chair inspired by Wegner’s iconic, “The Chair.” This particular design is also known as, “The Round Chair” and is undoubtedly Wegner’s most successful design.
The class begins with a trip to the Yale Furniture Study to look at the original design. We return to the shop and begin working on turning the legs and preparing the structure of the chair. If you’ve never turned legs, or have limited experience turning, don’t worry. Chuck will show you an innovative method to get accurate turnings that is easily repeated in your shop.
Working with 16/4 & 8/4 Honduras Mahogany, you will learn how to accurately make round tenons on a turned leg, how to shape and flow a sculpted part into a turning, how to utilize a very unique joint to join the curved parts which form the back and arms of the chair, and how to shape and sculpt large pieces of wood to create a light and flowing design. If you are into Mid Century Modern design then you owe it to yourself to learn the unique skills needed to build this unique chair.
