Description
Learn to build this contemporary side table that looks complex but is really quite simple to build once you know its secrets. The base is assembled using five mortise and tenon joints, so it is as sturdy as it is attractive. Tim will show you how to use files, rasps and scrapers to create the sculptural shape for the feet. To create the decorative veneered top, Tim will share his unique approach to veneering onto solid wood. This technique allows you to use a decorative surface veneer, while still being able to shape the edge of the top like any other solid wood component. The table can be made in a choice of species- Cherry or mahogany base with either the same species for the top- or a lighter contrasting wood like tiger maple – or- you could go the opposite with a tiger maple base and mahogany or cherry top! If you have made the “Cracked Ice” or “Ribbon veneer” top with Tim in a previous class this would be a perfect table too use that on! Email Bob Van Dyke (bob@schoolofwoodworking.com) to discuss your choice. The accompanying photo is to give you a good idea of the finished project but your table will end up different based on your species and design choices.
