Description
Federal era cabinetmaker, John Shaw of Annapolis, Maryland, has always been one of my favorite cabinetmakers. Why,...... because he was a true cabinetmaker, making everything from ammunition cases and coffins, to some of the finest mid-Atlantic furniture. The particular table we will build in this week long class is inspired by a famous Pembroke table that Shaw made for his daughter, Mary, in the late 1790s. Surfacing again in an antique shop in Ohio in the 1970s, it was purchased by renowned collectors, George and Linda Kaufman and is now on view at the Museum of Early American Southern Decorative Arts (Mesda) in Old Salem, North Carolina.
Quite simply, this is a charming piece with an abundance of learning opportunities. Knuckle joints, rule joints, astragal moldings , stringing and Shaw's own funky use of quatrefoil inlays will make this a full week of head-scratching while producing an absolutely wonderful table steeped in America's finest furniture traditions. Sign up today. Class is limited to eight participants. Steve is one of this country’s foremost furnituremakers and is an expert on American inlay techniques & history.
