Description
The trade of blacksmithing is one of the most misrepresented and least understood of the ancient crafts. This introduction to basic blacksmithing will expose you to the fundamental skills needed to successfully transform plain iron into objects that are both useful and attractive.
We will tackle some small projects that will give you a taste of the skills used in more complex projects. After trying our hands at some small hooks and maybe a letter opener the first day we will then jump into forging your own marking knife the second day.
The methods Chip uses here are based on many years of smithing and teaching to others both in his own shop and at numerous other venues including Mystic Seaport Museum, North Stonington Fair, Lebanon Country Fair, Brooklyn Fair, Historic Jordan Village, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Erie Maritime Museum, and numerous others.
All tools and materials are provided. Please wear fully enclosed shoes- No sandals!
The only thing you need to bring is the willingness to try a new experience and to have a good time.
As you build your skills you can begin to think of other applications for incorporating blacksmithing skills into woodworking. In future classes other tools can be tackled, cabinet or door hardware can be made and other projects that you may not even have thought of- yet!
Don’t miss this great opportunity to begin to incorporate some iron work into your woodworking journey!
Tuition: $385.00 plus materials ($49.00 plus tax)
