Description
In this 6-day class students will get the chance to learn a whole lot of new skills all packed into one small project. This elegant box features dovetails, working with veneer, an inlaid banding on the top and a really cool technique for accurately setting hinges.
We will start off the week with dovetails- we will start with cutting by hand, learning what are the important parts of the joint and then what are the less important parts- and then- after some practice we will transition to incorporating “machine assisted” dovetails. The great thing about this is you can use the strengths of various machines- or not- its up to you and it all works! Along the way we will start working with veneers- flattening, storing, matching, creating invisible seams and learning about adhesives. To hide the seam between the solid wood and the veneer we will make and set in a patterned banding. Prepare to have your eyes opened when we get into making the banding – the techniques are not even close to what you might think they are! Setting the hinges in a box like this is critical- any deviation and the top will not mate up with the base- Stay tuned for a really unique and effective way to set the hinges so they line up perfectly every time!
