Description
This five-day class course will take you, step-by-step, through the process of hand crafting an a classic Appalachian ladderback chair in the style made popular by the late Jenny Alexander.
We will cover all aspects of making this style chair beginning with the importance of careful lumber selection, the specific handtools used in the construction of these chairs and how to use them to their fullest potential in the shaping of all the chair’s parts. Along the way we will examine and learn to use the drawknife, spokeshave and scraper to rive the parts form the wet wood & refine the shapes. Steam-bending is a big part of most green wood chairs so we will jump into that along with laying out and drilling compound angles and examining all the characteristics of a good strong chair joint.
