Description

If you have not yet tackled building a chair, this is a great introduction. We will combine hands on  project work while examining what it takes to make a successful chair; ie, aesthetics, comfort and durability.

The project is a clean-lined Scandinavian - Modern-inspired folding lounge chair and ottoman with a woven seat and back. Depending on the material you use for the webbing, this could be an interior or exterior chair.

We will shape and construct all of the wooden components using a combination of hand and power tools. Due to the logistics of the time we can spend  in class the finishing and seat weaving will be demonstrated but not completed during class.

In this exciting new class with Florida School of Woodwork Director, Andrew Gibson, you can expect to learn about:

Geometry and ergonomics, what makes certain chairs comfortable and others not.

The Danish Modern furniture movement as a whole and its profound impact on so much of the furniture we interact with daily.

Creating bent laminations.

Using templates to create and pattern rout  multiple matching chair components.

Cutting joinery for pieces that contain angles or curves.

Cutting mortise and tenon joints.

Seat weaving –Because the chair needs to have finish that has cured, before the weaving of the seat, the weaving will be demonstrated but not completed during class.

This is not a beginning class.  Some familiarity with routers, a bandsaw, and general woodworking equipment is needed.

Andrew Gibson is the Director of the Florida School of Woodwork in Tampa, Florida.
