      Description

Patented in 1802 by Simon Willard, the banjo clock is truly an American original. The round head and long throat connect to the square pendulum box, giving the clock its banjo-like appearance. In typical Neo-Classical style, these clocks have clean lines, vertical proportions, and details that reference classical architecture.

Making a case that is delicate in appearance while being strong enough to hang on a wall, house and protect the clock movement, and embody Federal elegance presents multiple challenges for the woodworker. In the period, simple construction methods were used. We’ll use some of the historical methods, while updating others to produce an even stronger version of the clock case.

Some of the things you’ll learn in this class are:

      • Making and using full-size shop drawings from photos
      • Forming and making round furniture parts
      • Angular and tangential joinery

We are also looking into making the decorative brass side brackets in the class using the Shaper Origin.

Because there are a number of variables in the hardware & glass we are not setting a materials fee for this class yet. There are also hardware choices that you will need to make. We are planning on people using readily available quartz movements but we are looking into sourcing mechanical movements if you want to go that route. As soon as we get all the information and costs we will contact you. The materials fee can be paid at that time.

We are looking forward to making this iconic and truly unique American wall clock with one of the best cabinetmakers and instructors in the country today. Sign up soon!

Class will meet in two 3 day weekends.

      Tuition: $1175.00 plus materials (TBD)
