Description

Join traditional handtool woodworker, Brian Weldy as he guides you through the process and techniques for working with wide furniture parts- entirely by hand. Brian is a “joiner” at Colonial Williamsburg and has been educating the public in 18th century woodworking techniques for many years.

This hands-on three day class introduces the essential hand tools used to prepare wide boards for projects such as slant-front desks, tables, and casework. We will cover tuning & using wooden hand planes, including sharpening and understanding the geometry of blade angles. Brian will also point out what to look for—and what to avoid—when buying used wooden planes. Bring your own plane to tune up or you are welcome to use one of the planes provided. An indispensable shop tool used in preparing stock is a pair of winding sticks so we will each make our own pair as an important part of this class.

After the planes are tuned up and the winding sticks are made we will learn & practice the process of flattening and dimensioning a wide board. We will then proceed to cut a mortice & tenon joint used in the creation of a bread board end which is typically used in a traditional slant front desk. These joints will be cut entirely by hand.  The school has many of the tools you will be using but if you already own them then be sure to bring them along- it is always better to learn on the tools you will be using in your own shop.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn hand tool woodworking from an instructor who only works with handtools- every day!
