In Memory of Richard Bergen

Richard BergenIt is with great sadness that I tell you Richard Bergen lost his courageous battle with Leukemia on Thursday, April 9, 2020. He was a close personal friend for over 20 years and a huge asset in the school. Richard took dozens and dozens of classes over the years and assisted in most of the beginning classes for many years. Every studio photograph of the school furniture projects was done by Richard- free of charge!

Richard never hesitated to jump in and help out any time we needed it and was a huge help to hundreds of students..

He will be sorely missed.

Build  a Distinctive and Sculptural Rocking Chair with Michael A Doerr

doerr_rocker.jpgThis distinctive rocking chair designed by Michael Doerr will give students an opportunity to learn a unique method of furniture making which results in a very fluid, sculptural and comfortable chair. The chair starts off with pre-milled straight and square blocks in the wood species of choice (tiger maple, cherry or walnut). All the joinery is cut and fitted while the chair is in block form. After assembling these parts into the block form chair, students will then disassemble and start to reduce these blocks into the shaped chair parts.

An important part of Michael's demonstrations will be seat construction, leg to seat joinery and final shaping of the parts using the table saw, routers, band saw and simple hand tools. This class will be an intense and rewarding experience that will offer students the knowledge and experience to create their own rocking chair in their own workshops. This is not a beginner class and students should have a basic knowledge of woodworking power tools. Michael's focus will be to teach students an approach to chair construction and design that they will be able to draw on in the future. Read a complete profile of Michael Doerr and view his chairs at Don't miss this opportunity to make a unique piece of furniture that you and your family will appreciate for years to come. Tuition: $645.00 plus materials
