Build a Distinctive and Sculptural Rocking Chair with Michael A Doerr
This distinctive rocking chair designed by Michael Doerr will give students an opportunity to learn a unique method of furniture making which results in a very fluid, sculptural and comfortable chair. The chair starts off with pre-milled straight and square blocks in the wood species of choice (tiger maple, cherry or walnut). All the joinery is cut and fitted while the chair is in block form. After assembling these parts into the block form chair, students will then disassemble and start to reduce these blocks into the shaped chair parts.
An important part of Michael's demonstrations will be seat construction, leg to seat joinery and final shaping of the parts using the table saw, routers, band saw and simple hand tools. This class will be an intense and rewarding experience that will offer students the knowledge and experience to create their own rocking chair in their own workshops. This is not a beginner class and students should have a basic knowledge of woodworking power tools. Michael's focus will be to teach students an approach to chair construction and design that they will be able to draw on in the future.
