Build a Pembroke Table with Steve Latta
The Pembroke is one of the most versatile and adaptable styles of tables in terms of form and ornamentation. They are common throughout Colonial America and are still quite popular today. Each region, New England to the South, had a method of ornamentation that made their furniture uniquely their own. In this class, participants will choose one of the basic forms, flat or oval, and choose for his/herself a style of ornamentation. Attendees will benefit from watching a wide range of inlay unfold during this class. A variety of different legs are pictured here to give you an idea of the possible ornamentation you can choose. Each style derives from a specific region of the country.
Plan on spending a night or two during the week to explore the techniques Steve uses to accomplish the intricate inlay work that is so characteristic of these great American treasures. Because of the complexity of this project and the level of ornamentation that you may want to add, and the need to practice the techniques several time to gain proficiency, do not expect to bring home a fully completed and assembled Pembroke table. Be assured you will learn more than enough to finish up any unfinished details on the project on your own and then be able to take on other more challenging projects in the future!
