Make a Contemporary (& Comfortable!) Chair with Michael A. Doerr

138_Doerr_Chair_block_and_finished.jpgThis project oriented class features well-known Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin furniture maker, Michael A. Doerr who will guide students through a thoroughly unique approach to making one of the most distinctive and comfortable chairs you will ever see. Each student will start with a set of pre-milled wooden "blocks" in the wood species they have selected. Mike will demonstrate seat construction, leg to seat joinery using the table saw, band saw, routers and simple hand tools. Mike will also employ some unique mortice and tenon methods developed by well known chairmaker, Sam Maloof. After assembling the parts in "block" form students will begin transforming that linear chair into a sculptural and unique chair using a variety of hand and power tools. Key considerations when shaping the chairs will be: seat to back relationship, comfort, design elements when creating your own chair, selection of appropriate woods and grain considerations. Variations on the basic leg and back shape are possible so students who have taken this class in previous years may be interested taking it again and making a new version of it. A example of the finished chair may be seen at the school or on our web site. A complete profile or Michael Doerr and his work may be seen at http://www.michaeldoerr.com/ . Don't miss this unique opportunity to make a unique piece of furniture that you and your family will appreciate for years to come. Tuition: $595.00 (plus materials)
