Steven Coffey

Steven participated in an inlay class with instructor Steve Latta a couple of years ago.

I recently built an 1810 George/John Hoff PA tall clock, copied from the original at the Winterthur Museum, and entered it in the San Diego fair. I was notified this weekend that I was awarded the Society of American Period Furniture Makers award for best period piece, as well as first prize in the clock division!

I made all of the bandings myself, did all of the inlay as well using the techniques that Steve taught. Please note the cross-hatch banding at the base of the hood. It took six attempts before I was happy with the end result. Hopefully you can see from the photo that I also inlaid the case’s corners, the hood’s pillars, and the gooseneck molding, all in satinwood. Needless to say it was a very challenging project!

Thanks for the last five weeks. This was one of the best learning experiences I have ever had. Thanks for your patience and I look forward to taking more courses in the future. Meanwhile, this summer, I'll keep practicing dovetails and I'll look forward to seeing you at the open house.

All I can say is WOW!  Mike Mascelli is absolutely terrific!
