Creative Box Making with Doug Stowe
Well-known box maker and writer, Doug Stowe will host this unique weeklong hands-on class. Take a week off and learn from one of the best as we look into the creative process that is always a big part of building unique and beautiful boxes. Most of us have been inspired by the many box makers exhibiting quality workmanship in creative and unique designs. As a beginning or intermediate box maker, you may wonder, “How do I get there from here?” There is a common misperception that inspiration comes from out of the blue, but our own lives and interests may provide the opening of a doorway into personal expression and meaningful work. Doug Stowe’s classes are always flexible and he makes every effort to personalize instruction and meet individual needs. As Doug does in his own shop, in this exciting weeklong class we will start with the wood. The beauty of wood is what will provide the inspiration. Unlike other classes, you are welcome and encouraged to bring wood from your own supplies, as it expresses something very personal about each of us and carries part of our character and interests into the creative environment of the shop. Of course you can always pick the wood from the school stock also. An understanding of wood and its nature as a creative material is ground zero in the understanding of design. We begin Monday morning with a discussion of the material and its characteristics, with a particular focus on how our understanding of its properties can lead us to excellence in the final product. We will then discuss the other elements of design, and types of joints. We will quickly make necessary jigs to begin crafting boxes using a variety of joints, each personalized to the taste of the maker. Each student should be able to complete between one and three unique boxes during the week. Sign up soon. Don’t miss this opportunity to work with one of this country’s leading craftsmen. Tuition: $795.00 plus materials used.
